What happens if I lose my seed phrase?

The critical importance of securing your 15 or 24-word recovery phrase.

You Must Protect Your Seed Phrase

The "seed phrase" (usually 15, 24, or 12 random words given to you when creating a wallet) is the ultimate master key to your blockchain assets. It is actually just a human-readable representation of your private cryptographic key.

Loss of Access

If your computer breaks, you lose your phone, or you forget your wallet password, your seed phrase is the ONLY way to recover your funds on a new device.

If you lose your seed phrase, and lose access to the device where the wallet is currently unlocked, your ADA are gone forever. There is no customer support hotline, no central bank, and no "forgot password" button in a completely decentralized system. The funds remain untouched on the blockchain forever, but perfectly inaccessible.

Best Practices

  • Never store your seed phrase digitally (no screenshots, no text files, no cloud storage).
  • Write it down clearly on paper (or stamp it into metal) and store it in a secure, fireproof location, like a safe.
  • Never share it with anyone online. Anyone with those words has full control over your money instantly.
